The courts became a battleground!  Players came to win. Spectators were at the edge of their seats. Adrenaline was high all over, and the players’ incredible fighting spirit was a joy to witness. Hope and dreams seem to ride on every serve; redemption or despair on every point.  It was amazing to see some play through unsettling pain and injury.  Lucky that there was a capable nurse on standby!

WTA player, Ding Eckstein of China dominated Hsin-Yun Wen of Taipei to win the Women’s Singles 35+.28 handshake (4)  Longtime rivals, Jiri Cermak of the Czech Republic and Simon Rapoport of Israel, carried out a highly entertaining and explosive match which saw the former emerging as the victor in the Men’s Singles 60+.

The fire has definitely not burned out for these incredible athletes!  Grinding it out in closely fought matches, it was evident that each of them was driven to give all they can on and off the court. Regardless of age or background, those who can stay insanely self-motivated and remain at the top of their game are those that set the bar high and earn the respect of their peers. They set themselves apart and we call them the real fighters. Blessed with beautiful weather all throughout, the impressive showdowns created an action-packed event for all!

I’ve played in Indonesia, the Philippines, in Hawaii and the USA but what’s really good about Fitz Club is, you have top-notch facilities and good lighting. Staff are very friendly. The atmosphere is charming and the people are very nice. It’s wonderful that it’s sponsored by Singha and Royal Cliff and they work together to create top-notch tennis events for seniors.  I hope to be here again next year!

Mr. Daniel Rajsky, the co-organizer of the Thailand World Seniors Championship ITF Grade A has this to say about the venue:

“Fitz Club is Royal Cliff’s cutting-edge luxury sports center which has been frequented by top ATP players and sports stars from around the world. It is located in a highly accessible location and has the facilities to hold a world-class even,t including seating areas for the spectatorsWe have hosted 2 successful ITF events in the past and we have received nothing but excellent feedback from all the participants.  The team also has experience in organizing tournaments and is headed by a CEO, Mr. Vitanart Vathanakul, who is passionate about the sport.  He plays tennis and loves tennis and this is one of the main reasons why we can organize this remarkable ITF event in the beautiful luxurious facilities of Royal Cliff in Pattaya, Thailand. “

  • Organized by Tennis Players who are passionate about the sport

Anyone knows how hard it is to set up a world-class sports event such as this one.  The organisers of the 2019 Thailand World Seniors Championship Grade A are all passionate about Tennis and it shows!

21 Khun Gap group shot with players (1)Veteran ITF players, Daniel Rajsky and Jiri Cermak were on a lookout for a world-class facility in Pattaya to hold the ITF tournaments and they wanted to partner with someone who was also passionate about the sport.  They found that in the athletic CEO of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group, Vitanart Vathanakul, who they have played regular matches with.  They agreed to partner together to bring the ITF championships to the Fitz Club.  It was amazing how a passion for the sport brought these 3 Tennis enthusiasts together and the Pattaya ITF tournament was born.

It is not easy to run a multi-billion dollar family business and conquer goals in the Tennis arena at the same time. That’s precisely what Vitanart Vathanakul, the multitalented CEO of the Royal Cliff Hotels Group is doing.  He started playing Tennis at the age of 5, following in his father’s footsteps.  In his earlier years, he was the captain of the 1st VI Tennis team at the Oratory School which was renowned as one of the best racquet sports schools in England. He continued to pursue the sport through college by being a member of the prestigious Cambridge University Lawn Tennis Club team.  Organising the ITF tournament meant a lot to him as he was able to bring his passion to life and carry on the legacy of his mother who was also the first to organise the successful Veterans Championships in Pattaya.  An all-around athlete, his love for the sport continued to grow as he grew older.

Khun Gap.jpgAsked why he loves the game so much, he said that Tennis simply showcases to the world what someone is truly made of.  It tests your fortitude to the extreme, exposes your temperament, reveals character and compels a player to be self-reliant and disciplined in the court.  It ultimately helps build essential skills that can be applied in business.

“With Tennis, you are solely responsible for the outcome.  When you go out there to compete, the spotlight is shining on you.  You learn to be adaptable.  You have to solve problems on your own.  Your mental, physical and emotional skills are tested.  You learn to think on your feet to figure out your opponent.  It’s a sport that makes you constantly improve, that’s why it’s very addictive.”

Never one to back down on a challenge, he fought his way through to reach the tough semi-finals of the championship.  This was a memorable moment for him as he battled and triumph over experienced opponents and earned himself a world ranking to reach the top 250.   He illustrated a perfect example of commitment to realise a dream. “Playing against these incredible competitors who gave all they can on and off the court and who worked so hard to remain in top form was such an inspiring experience and made me feel proud to have reached the semi-finals and represent Thailand.”

photo 2.jpg

As someone who continuously develops himself, he believes in testing his skills against top-level opponents in tournaments in order to improve as a sportsman.   For him, nothing beats the feeling of satisfaction you get when you win and know that all your hard work has paid off.   To appreciate the competition, to overcome losses, to practice discipline, to steadily persevere, Tennis has taught him to be a better businessman as he daily lives out fundamental values that he has learned from his ultimate life sport and he wants to help draw more people into the game.

“We are proud to have successfully organised a tournament that brought the highest quality tennis to Thailand.  This incredible event enabled us to create an electrifying battle arena for players from all over the world who share the same passion for the sport.  It was remarkable and humbling to meet top-level athletes who continue to excel and inspire as they fought their hearts out in tightly fought matches. We are truly gratified to have been able to put Pattaya and Thailand on the map as a top Tennis and sports destination and remain committed to continuing to run ITF tournaments annually.”

This is the third time that Fitz Club has successfully organised the ITF Championship and each time, it just keeps getting better and better.

  • Players were in top form and fought their hearts out

In sports, getting older really doesn’t mean the end of the competition!  There is absolutely no reason to stop doing something you love as the years pile up.  The Thailand World Seniors Championship is an excellent testament to that.  Fast, slick and conditioned,   the players showed grit, strength and endurance that bypass their years. What keeps these amazing athletes so athletic and spirited at this later stage in life? What is it that makes them burn?  What makes them get up every single day and do what they do?  What keeps them in the competition?

Most declared that having a burning passion has enabled them to live healthier and live just a little bit longer. It could be having an enthusiasm for sports, for winning, for achieving goals or for self-improvement. Whatever it is, it’s what keeps them going. It compels them to work hard and gauge their capabilities in tournaments as well as live an active lifestyle to make all these possible.

Players mentioned that they possess a drive to improve. They don’t stop because they love to always better themselves.  One player mentioned that experiencing many sought-after wins and feeling stronger with each tournament gets him through gruelling training. Many stay consistent because they keep setting new goals and having fun.   Sometimes, it is merely tracking and seeing results.  They love knowing that they can now wholly do something that they once thought would be impossible for them.  They cherish every moment of accomplishment and just have a genuine love for the sport.

“We like sports. We like the feeling of having obstacles and facing challenges in sports which make us active. That’s why we would like to invite more Thai seniors to join tournaments like these to have a healthy lifestyle.  We believe that we have a lot of good local players.”

Puttaruksa Jantamad and Somrit Phonwisut (Thailand)

Winners of Women’s Singles 35+

These inspiring athletes are not just about winning but on a never-ending path of constant self-improvement.  Some of the oldest ones have proven that the golden years need not be intimidating or lifeless. It can still be colourful and vibrant, simply by continuing to be passionate about a sport you love.  These guys have been playing Tennis for many many years, but they are still talking about how they can improve their forehand or backhand. They are real superstars!

  • Igniting the Competitive Spirit of the Senior Generation

28 handshake (1)These matches are as much about the journey as the destination. Beautiful memories of camaraderie and sportsmanship were created along the way.  New friendships were established.  Wins and losses became an inspiration for something bigger.  All came together to celebrate their united love for the sport.  20 Registration (3)It was wonderful to see the players’ highs and lows, the intense excitement and the euphoric screams, the despondency for lost shots and the exhilaration of every point.  No one can forget the stamina of 60-year-old players who played for 4 hours straight, the elation of first-time winners, the happiness of the staff and how experienced athletes taught us how to lose with grace. These incredible players are indeed an inspiration to the next generation of players across the tennis world.  The Thailand Seniors Tennis Championship ITF Grade A is an experience that every Tennis fan should have!

Some thoughts on the Thailand incredible cave rescue and little life lessons to get out of it on your next travels

So much has been written about the amazing Thai soccer team who were trapped for days in a cave in Chiang Mai.  It’s a story that has truly captivated the world.  I was one of many who followed this unbelievable story closely from day 1. Now that they are out of danger with an outcome that is nothing short of a miracle, these are some reflections on what their ordeal can teach us in times of disasters.

  1. Their story serves as an inspiration to venture forth and explore in our everyday lives (Life is an adventure) – Without knowing the ordeal that they will face in the upcoming weeks, these boys ventured into the cave with childlike wonder with the goal to explore and to celebrate youth. Because of these, they gave the entire country and the whole world not just an inspiring story but also an opportunity to shine and they did.

  1. Always be prepared – We have been told time and time again about the importance of being prepared. When going off to some unknown adventure, you truly never know what might happen along the way. The endless possibilities that an adventure brings is what makes it so exciting.  Know the place you will be visiting and bring essential items you might need for an emergency.  Depending on where you are going and what the weather will be like, this could range from bottled water, a small flashlight, first aid kit, umbrella and other items.    It would also never hurt to double check the name and reputation of places you will be staying in. Like the boys in the cave, you never know when you will be faced with the unexpected.

  1. No man is an island – There could really be strength in numbers. The boys and their coach were able to keep calm because they were together.  In times of emergencies or ominous setbacks, support is so relevant.   I could just imagine what it must be like to be swallowed by terrifying darkness with floodwaters beneath your feet and no sense of time in a damp desolate cave not knowing what is going on in the outside world. For someone who is alone, paralyzing fear might set in.  Panic might overwhelm all emotions and the person might do something life-threatening or ultimately lose the will to live.  However, the support of your peers and knowing that you are not undergoing something so devastating all by yourself can truly be enough to give someone the drive to make small miracles happen.

  1. Human resilience and the importance of meditation – One of the most incredible things about this incident was seeing the cool and calm composure of those boys the moment when they were found. The photos and video were splashed all over the news.  It was amazing how there was no sense of panic or hysteria after being in total darkness for a couple of days nor there was victim mentality or thoughts of glory after the whole ordeal. It was mentioned in many news stories that the coach taught the boys meditation techniques to help them stay calm and to save energy. A steady mind and one’s determination to survive do play a key factor in enduring the most nerve-wracking situations.

  1. People can still work for the collective good – There is always hope for humanity. We are reminded that miracles do happen when people converge together to work for a common goal. Be it with prayers, resources or emotional support for the family, the whole community came together for these boys.  Concerned teachers and classmates, entire villages, volunteers flying in from all parts of Thailand, international rescuers along with the whole world lit up social media with expressions of encouragement and support. It was very heartwarming to see the volunteers do all they can against all odds.  It showed that despite all the craziness that goes on in the world, nothing is as profound as when something collectively touches human hearts and the lengths that people can go through to realize a selfless achievement.

  1. Appreciation for the men in uniform, the media and international team– Fortunately for these boys, it was the media that did an excellent coverage of their story in order to catch the attention of the world. Without the global journalists and the news, they may not have survived. Experts and specialists from the international team was crucial for the success of this rescue. Moreover, this was truly a time where the soldiers had incredible moments to shine. They literally placed their lives on the line to achieve something for the common good. Sometimes, there really are opportunities that come for people with a specific skill set and in this case, it was the soldiers and the Thai government that were thrust into the spotlight.  Cheers to them for providing all-out support to an impossible situation and for exhausting all means necessary.  The authorities called in the elite Thai Navy Seals, the national police, and other rescue teams. Local volunteers also pitched in.  With the eyes of the entire world on them, they certainly didn’t disappoint.  They embodied the quote “Courage is not the absence of fear but the ability to act in spite of it.”  From gathering the best of the best to help with the rescue, to exhausting resources, to the meticulous planning against a merciless weather – they placed everything on the line and achieved such a successful aftermath.

  1. Positive notes to their loved ones from the boys – The heartfelt notes were deeply moving.  There were lots of hearts and smileys and the notes exuded an overall positive overtone. When reading what was sent out to their loved ones, we find something that is not expected on young boys trapped without food, light or communication from the outside world for days. We were given a glimpse of their enthusiastic disposition despite the bleakness of their situation. Through scrawling hearts and smiley faces on note papers, the boys told their parents again and again that they loved them and not to worry.  They reminded us of the importance of keeping the faith during hopeless times.  With astounding odds against them, the rescuers persevered.  The kids never despaired.   The families never gave up.  Different countries watched with bated breath how this mind-blowing rescue unfolded.  And then, the whole world exalted.

Finally, we would always remember the jubilation of the entire world when the first video of how they were found emerged.  In a current divided planet battling with cultural prejudice, racial discrimination and selfish capitalism, they essentially made us remember what unity can accomplish. We are reminded that we are living in a world where love and friendship triumphs all. This unprecedented feat made the world believe again and that in itself, is very inspiring.

Happy travels!

Getting Around Pattaya: Tips from a Fresh Caucasian (Farang)

Planes, trains and automobiles – what do these things have in common? They are all forms of transportation! What’s unique about transportation in all parts of the world is how drastically different the modes can be. For example, in London, England, the main form of transportation for locals is the London Underground Network or The Tube while in Venice, Italy, a popular form of transport is the gondola. People have adapted well to specific climates and landscapes to efficiently get from point A to point B. When visiting a new place, one way to fully immerse yourself in the local culture is to take a spin in the popular form of transportation.

If you plan on traveling to Pattaya in the future, you’ll see that there are many forms of transportation you can take to get around. While some are pretty common, others are definitely not! This is why we have created a guide with tips on taking advantage of all types of transportation you will see in Pattaya written by a new Pattaya resident.

Taxis

I’ll start off with the most common form of transportation: taxis.

Taxi-meter_in_Pattaya_05.jpg

Everyone knows the drill when it comes to taxi etiquette; hail one from the sidewalk or airport, pack your belongings in the trunk, jump into the backseat, tell the driver where to go and then, you’re off. Most of the time, your ride will go smoothly but to prepare for the other times when it might not, here are some useful tips:

Before getting into the taxi, take note of the vehicle registration plate of the car.  Once inside, you can also take a photo of the name plaque on the dashboard. Take note of the name of the taxi company and any other contact information you can manage to find. A phone number for the driver can also be very helpful.

Why you should do this: A few weeks ago, my sister came to visit from the United States. From the international airport in Bangkok, she chose to take a taxi to go to Pattaya. Because of jet lag and the fact that she finally arrived at my house in the wee hours of the morning at 4:00 am, she did the unspeakable. She left her passport in the backseat of the taxi and only realized this when the taxi was already gone. Frantic, we both tried everything we could to find that taxi that she took. We tried calling the airport, called different taxi services and even reached out on sites like TripAdvisor!  However, since she didn’t have any contact information of that specific driver, there was nothing we could do. Out of fantastic luck, that same taxi driver, out of his own accord, actually drove all the way back from Bangkok the next day to drop off her passport at our house. This is definitely not the norm for any country so whatever contact information you can get, the better!

-This might seem redundant from the tip above but make sure you double/triple check to see if you have not left anything behind inside your taxi before you let it drive away. Better safe than sorry when it comes to your personal belongings!

Grab is now in Pattaya and makes hailing a taxi the easiest! All you have to do is download the app on your phone. Simply type in the address of where you are currently (the GPS tracker on the app is actually quite good so it will almost always automatically fill in your current location) and then type in where you want to go and it finds a driver close to where you are. The app even has a tracker for how far the driver is and alerts you when he/she is a few minutes away. Another perk is the constant discount codes and awards you can earn while you use it.

Don’t be alarmed if your driver pulls over multiple times during your commute.

Why you shouldn’t be alarmed: I kid you not, every long distance taxi ride I have taken, the driver has made multiple stops. This is bizarre to me because taxis in the states NEVER stop during the ride. The first time I experienced this, I was on my way to the airport. The driver pulled to the side of the road, did something in the trunk, went to the bathroom and then ate a snack before continuing the trip. After a few times of this happening, I became used to it and now expect every driver to do the same (and most of them have).

-If you don’t want to bother with worrying about directions or if the driver will get you to or from the airport on time, always take advantage of the taxi service at your hotel/resort.

Why you should do this: Almost every time I come back from the airport, my driver has no idea how to get to where I need to go. Multiple times I have had to use my own GPS on my phone to guide him/her. I’d recommend using your hotel/resorts’ taxi service because the drivers will know exactly where to go and if not, the hotel staff can help you. Royal Cliff Hotels Group can arrange a hassle-free transfer to a wide selection of routes at special rates specifically catered to your needs.

Motorbike Taxis

Next up are motorbike taxis for a true taste of how locals get around!

motorbike-taxis.jpg

The first thing you’re likely to notice when you arrive in Pattaya are the overwhelming number of motorbikes on the road. Due to congested roadways, many prefer to drive motorbikes to bypass traffic or take little short-cuts not accessible by cars. If you are bold enough, hop on the back of one of these bikes and zoom through the city! But before you do, here’s some tips when it comes to choosing this form of transportation:

-There are no flat rate prices for trips you take on a motorbike. Every driver is different. Before you climb on, negotiate a price. If you are unsure of how much you should bargain, THB 40 is a pretty standard fare.  However, prices vary greatly depending on the distance.

-Ask if the driver has a helmet for you.

Why you should do this:  The reason is pretty obvious. If you need more convincing, on average 80 people die every day from motorbike related accidents in Thailand. The more you can protect yourself, the better!

-Ask to see the driver’s license.

Why you should do this: I actually drive my own motorbike around Pattaya. When I first got my bike, I didn’t have my license yet (it took some time because I needed my work permit, visa and various paperwork). Just like in most countries, if you get pulled over and are without a license you have to pay a fine. The first time I got pulled over, I was one of many on the side of the road waiting to receive a ticket. What surprised me about this was there were A LOT of motorbike taxis that were in the same boat as me. This is why I suggest you ask to see their driver’s license. If they are to be pulled over, you’ll have to stop your commute and either wait for them to get back from the police station or hop on another bike.

P.S. There are many places to rent a motorbike for yourself when you are here. I suggest you skip out on this experience as police are trained to spot rental bikes and will ticket you especially in high tourist areas. If you are pulled over without a license, you have to leave your bike with the police officer, find another mode of transportation to the police station, pay a THB 400 fine and find your way back to your bike.

Baht Buses

Baht Buses (aka blue trucks with bleacher seats installed in the bed).

Songthaew_in_Pattaya_17.jpg

The more common word these baht buses are “songthaews”. While you’ll see more of the traditional Tuktuk’s in Bangkok, Baht Buses are very common in Pattaya! Baht buses can carry up to 10 or more passengers (when they are packed, there is a metal grate suspended from the bumper where 3-4 more people can stand and hang on) that usually drive around Pattaya in designated circuits. When you want the vehicle to stop while on board, you simply press a button above your head and the driver will pull over. Here is what you need to know before you cruise:

-You pay the driver through the passenger side window before you hop off the back. The starting rate for short-distance rides is THB 10 (THB 20-30 for longer routes). Most, not all, drivers will charge more if you ask them how much the trip cost. It’s better if you get off and hand over 10-30 baht without question.

-If you are traveling in a large group, try to find an empty baht bus or songthaew.

Why you should do this: There have been a couple of times when I was traveling with a large group (5+ people) and not all of us could fit in a taxi. The first time, I located an empty Baht Bus. I showed the driver I had a large group and asked if he could take us all to the Floating Market.  Normally, these buses follow a certain route but since I was with a group, he was able to take us directly to the market for a pre-negotiated rate. For what would have cost THB 300+ per taxi, ended up costing only THB 100 for 6 people by Baht Bus.

-If you are unsure of where that specific Baht Bus is headed, ask before you board.

Why you should do this: The first time I used a Baht Bus, I ended up jumping on and off 3 different trucks! Every time I hopped off, I had to pay THB 10 (as the bus would turn in the opposite direction from where I needed to go). The drivers know their end location so just ask them what that is before you get on. If you don’t know the area that well, I suggest getting a map or pulling up a map on your phone to see if your end destination coincides with the drivers’ route and end point.

Boats or Ferries

Catamaran

One of the most beautiful attractions in Pattaya is Koh Larn Island or Coral Island. With white beaches and a number of water activities, it’s definitely something you should add to your travel itinerary. The island is only 15 minutes by speedboat from Pattaya. You can easily rent a speedboat from Pattaya Beach or from Bali Hai Pier at the end of Walking Street. You can also take a ferry to Coral Island which takes about an hour. Here are some tips before you set sail:

-Check the weather before you plan your cruise or trip to the islands.

Why you should do this: While the weather is decently sunny during high-season, there are days/times when there could be heavy downpour. The last thing you want is to head out to an island and it starts raining. The speedboat ride is likely to be very unpleasant and the time spent on the island could be wasted if you need to stay indoors.

-Ask if your hotel/resort has any deals or travel guides to the island.

Why you should do this: I found out that it was hard to research or reserve a spot on a ferry or speed boat in order to get to the island. My first time there, I really didn’t know what to do. Your hotel/resort is likely to know just the right people to contact in order to maximize your island adventure.

For example, Royal Cliff offers their own catamaran service for private charter that will take you straight from the hotel to Coral Island. Equipped with trained staff and captain, you can be rest assured that your trip will be smooth sailing. They can also arrange for you to do a number of activities such as diving, snorkeling or specific sight-seeing. If that’s not enough, catering can be provided as well as sunset cocktails for a truly unforgettable experience!

Make Traveling with Children a Breeze! Simple tips for Better Family Travel

Taking a long distance trip to a foreign place can often become a huge undertaking for any traveller. Knowing what to pack, buying the plane tickets and scheduling your days definitely take a lot of planning. The planning drastically increases if you are traveling with children. We all know that travelling with little ones is more than just packing snacks and uploading the new cartoon episodes on the iPad for entertainment. To really have your holiday run as smoothly as possible from start to finish, you must factor in your child’s needs/wants into the overall itinerary.

To help out holidaymakers traveling with youngsters in tow, we’ve created a simple step by step guide with tips for planning and enjoying an unforgettable holiday with children!

Tips Before You Board the Airplane

Research children’s airline discounts and perks

If you are embarking on a long distance family trip, chances are, you not looking forward to the flight. However, knowing that there are specific discounts or perks available for those traveling with children might ease the stresses of flying. Some examples of common discounts include free travel for children younger than 2 years old or availing of a 25% discount for kids aged 2-11 years old. Additionally, there may be some awesome perks like special kids menus or even a bottle warming service for infants.

To see a full list of the best airlines for kids formulated by Travel Sort, click here!

Do not let your child pack their own suitcase

We’ve heard of parents allowing their children to pack their own suitcases only to find that instead of packing the essentials like socks and shoes, they have packed their rock collection. To turn the packing process into a learning experience, teach your child to pack and fold their clothes with you. If adding their input into what they would like to bring is important to you, allow them to fill a small baggie with whatever they want but limit it to only one (that way it won’t take up too much space in the suitcase or your carry-on luggage).

Check their passports

If you are travelling internationally, it is crucial to check the expiration date of your children’s passports. In some countries, children’s passports only last five years which goes faster than a blink of an eye! If the passports need to be renewed, allow at least four weeks before your trip.

Tips for Smooth Flying

image.jpg

Don’t forget the baby wipes!

Even if your children no longer require you to wipe their sticky faces clean, baby wipes are essential on long flights – especially when getting up to use the restroom sink is inconvenient. Wipe down the seats, arm rests, trays and little hands (yours too!) before AND after the flight for a squeaky clean journey.

Take full advantage of digital entertainment

While you still have access to your own Wi-Fi or from the airports, make sure to download tons of apps for inflight entertainment. Thanks to smart phones and tablets, gone are the days of hauling toys or colouring books on your flights. If your child is old enough to write, a fun idea is to have them start a travel blog/journal while on the plane. This will keep them entertained as you encourage them to write down their memories and experiences from their trip.

Track your child

One of the toughest challenge for parents is to constantly ensure that your kids are safe. Some parents have mixed opinions on whether they should put their child on a leash. While this does guarantee their whereabouts, another option is to write your contact information on their arm in case you happen to be separated amidst the busy airport crowds or when you are in transportation stations. Washable marker works best!

You can also try new wearable child tracking devices that seek to take the stress out of bringing small children on a trip.

Tips for an unforgettable vacation catered to everyone

Involve your children in planning the daily activities

The only way to truly know if your child will enjoy an activity is to ask them! Involving your children in planning your activities for the day will not only make them feel included but also expand their creativity and sense of adventure. You may be surprised at some of the ideas they come up with!

If you are having trouble deciding on the activities that will entertain everyone, try allowing specific times for certain activities. For example, if you were a guest at the Royal Cliff Hotels Group, you could allocate the first part of the day to spend at our Funtasea – Kids World where your little ones can play inside our special indoor kids zone, then the second part of the day can be spent doing something that you chose. For example, partaking in a new fitness class at our Fitz Club – Racquets, Health and Fitness, hanging out at our stunning infinity edged pools or releasing your inner superstar at the karaoke lounge at The Verge – Games, Pool and Karaoke.

Book a hotel/resort suited to your needs

Depending on your child’s age, it might be a good idea to book a hotel/resort accommodation with a conjoining room or to book family-friendly suites with bedrooms. Even if it’s just sleeping, having some alone time with your child can be very refreshing. Here at the Royal Cliff, we understand the importance of alone time and because of this, guests love our family suite complete with two bedrooms and even two separate bathrooms!

There is plenty of space for the whole family to relax and be together in Royal Cliff’s all new Family Suite. Offering spacious sleeping accommodation, luxurious amenities and stylish design, it is furnished with large comfortable beds wrapped in soft linens to ensure blissful sleep. Your family can relax, read, watch TV and enjoy the beautiful ocean views from the 2 balconies in the suite.

Let’s face it, not all the activities you plan will be entertaining for your little one and yourself. However, you can research on activities that uniquely offer both the adult and kid versions. For example, Royal Cliff offers Thai cooking classes within our resort. At our Nah Pah – Thai Cooking School, guests can come learn the skills of cooking one of the world’s most popular cuisines with the help of an award-winning Chef. Along with their parents, we also cater to our very young guests by offering a fun and interactive cooking and baking class for children.

Songkran: Brace Yourself For the Splash Wars!

Are you ready for the biggest water festival in Thailand?

If you’ve never paid a visit to the country around the month of April, there’s a chance you haven’t heard about Thailand’s unique New Year celebration called “Songkran” which starts from 13 April onwards. The dates of this interesting holiday isn’t the only aspect that differentiates it from many New Year celebrations. Despite the scorching heat of summer, locals and tourists alike will be soaking up the fun and happiness of exhilarating water fights in this year’s popular festival.

During this period, more than half a million people from all over Thailand and abroad will flood into the streets to celebrate this spectacular water fun experience. Songkran combines a water festival (water suits this holiday perfectly as April is one of Thailand’s hottest months), family reunions, street parties, beauty pageants and many other forms of entertainment into a truly extraordinary event for everyone. The word itself is derived from the Sanskrit language that means, “to pass or to move onto”. In the case of Songkran, the passing or moving refers to the transition of one year to the next.

You might be wondering why the element of water is paired with a New Year holiday. Just like many cultures, Thailand too holds their own beliefs and symbolisms. According to SongkranDay2014.com, water represents “cleansing” or “rejuvenating” which ties together with welcoming a new year. Before getting your water guns out and taking part in the revelry, don’t forget that Songkran is actually the traditional Thai New Year and the light hearted tradition of splashing each other is intentionally a way of wishing others to have more blessings in the upcoming year. Instead of becoming enraged with someone who completely soaks you on the streets, those who participate in throwing water believe they are washing away the burdens and bad luck of the previous year as well as cleansing for the New Year ahead.

Apart from the water fights, in the spirit of Thai traditions of hospitality, love and family, making merit, ritual bathing of Buddha images or water being poured into the hands of family elders are also done during this festive event. By doing this, Buddhists believe it will cleanse all misfortunes and enable them to have a good and gratifying life.

There’s still time for you to plan your trip to witness this happy celebration! For Pattaya, the party will reach its peak on 19 April 2017 which is called “Wan Lai” where the city’s Beach Road will be closed for traffic and turned into a thrilling venue for the splash wars.

If you are looking for a unique accommodation to match your Songkran experience, please click here for more information on Royal Cliff’s special offers. We have numerous exciting and creative packages for you! Please hurry and book now as these offers have a limited time period.
